Couples Therapy A satisfying, intimate relationship. Isn’t that what so many of us have searched for? We look for someone who will understand us, appreciate us, love us, and build a life with us. Yet when we think we’ve found the right person, made a match, something in the relationship goes awry, issues emerge, and for some couples discontent and disappointment surface. Couples therapy can help.
Often the initial work in couples therapy focuses on improving communication skills, developing couple focused problem solving abilities, helping partners ask for what they want and need from each other, understanding the relationship patterns, expectations, and sensitivities partners learned in their original families and how these emotional and relational patterns are replayed in the current relationship. Whatever relationship concerns couples present with, I tailor the treatment to meet their concerns and goals. In my work, I draw upon concepts and strategies from research by John Gottman, Harville Hendrix, and many psychodynamic theories. The work can be practical, growth promoting, and enriching. At times, I work with couples on financial issues by helping them articulate their unarticulated, deep-seated emotions and beliefs about money. Once long standing feelings and beliefs are spoken, work can begin on directly and clearly communicating about money, understanding the personal role and meaning money has in one’s life, and learning to speak honestly and directly about money.
